Nov. 17th, 2009 @ 12:04 pm 17/11/2009 - Memo week discoveries.

Fun fact: Fordham's Law Library has a Warp Drive.

17/11/2009 - Memo week discoveries.

From left to right: structural outline, fact outline, law outline, fact materials, laptop, law materials, empty bottles of liquid wakefulness.

17/11/2009 - Memo week discoveries.

It's all okay though, because I went on a good long walk through Central Park and caught this scene.

17/11/2009 - Memo week discoveries.

One more, with more clouds.

Nov. 1st, 2009 @ 08:54 pm The Poet, by William Cullen Bryant
Tags: ,

Thou, who wouldst wear the name
Of poet mid thy brethren of mankind,
And clothe in words of flame
Thoughts that shall live within the general mind !
Deem not the framing of a deathless lay
The pastime of a drowsy summer day.

But gather all thy powers,
And wreak them on the verse that thou dost weave,
And in thy lonely hours,
At silent morning or at wakeful eve,
While the warm current tingles through thy veins,
Set forth the burning words in fluent strains.

No smooth array of phrase,
Artfully sought and ordered though it be,
Which the cold rhymer lays
Upon his page with languid industry,
Can wake the listless pulse to livelier speed,
Or fill with sudden tears the eyes that read.

The secret wouldst thou know
To touch the heart or fire the blood at will ?
Let thine own eyes o'erflow ;
Let thy lips quiver with the passionate thrill ;
Seize the great thought, ere yet its power be past,
And bind, in words, the fleet emotion fast.

Then, should thy verse appear
Halting and harsh, and all unaptly wrought,
Touch the crude line with fear,
Save in the moment of impassioned thought ;
Then summon back the original glow, and mend
The strain with rapture that with fire was penned.

Yet let no empty gust
Of passion find an utterance in thy lay,
A blast that whirls the dust
Along the howling street and dies away ;
But feelings of calm power and mighty sweep,
Like currents journeying through the windless deep.

Seek'st thou, in living lays,
To limn the beauty of the earth and sky ?
Before thine inner gaze
Let all that beauty in clear vision lie ;
Look on it with exceeding love, and write
The words inspired by wonder and delight.

Of tempests wouldst thou sing,
Or tell of battles-make thyself a part
Of the great tumult ; cling
To the tossed wreck with terror in thy heart ;
Scale, with the assaulting host, the rampart's height,
And strike and struggle in the thickest fight.

So shalt thou frame a lay
That haply may endure from age to age,
And they who read shall say :
" What witchery hangs upon this poet's page !
What art is his the written spells to find
That sway from mood to mood the willing mind !"

{This is from an ancient book I got from the used bookstore yesterday, an 1879 publication of Bryant's works. Fun fact: he's the namesake of Bryant Park}

Current Location: NYC, NY, U.S. of A.
Current Mood: !

Here's the deal, minimum details for now:
NASA's having a call for competition-prize ideas: Ideas for New NASA Prize Challenges

I want to submit one.

It's not about rocket science. At its heart, it's about people.

I want your help.

Interested? Shoot me an email: sunistrimza@gmail.com

LJ folks get first notice, because I want to develop the idea more before I start putting this up on the more general social networks I frequent.

(Obviously, this takes back-burner to school-stuff for the time being, but I'm sick and tired of reading about what's going on with the U.S. space program and not at least throwing a hat into that ring and trying to do something about it.)

Ungh. No class today because of Yom Kippur, but who forgets to turn off their alarm?
Go Team Me.

Had an excellent, relaxing weekend with [info]ladyenna up in the mountains, doing very little but sipping tea and chatting. S'mores were made.
Attempted brewing some of my chai from India for the first time, too. It came out downright drinkable!

All in all, a good and relaxing break from the City and the School. Many thanks to all who made it possible.

Now, to attempt a few more hours of sleep...

So, I found this site (theyfightcrime.org).

It's a generator, and ... well, I kind of wish I wrote pulp detective/crime-fighting stories, because it would be THE BEST concept-creation generator ever.

One prime example:
"He's a short-sighted playboy rock star on a mission from God. She's a beautiful hypochondriac safe cracker with a flame-thrower. They fight crime!"

or maybe "He's a hate-fuelled Catholic cyborg searching for his wife's true killer. She's a bloodthirsty paranoid fairy princess from the wrong side of the tracks. They fight crime!"

or ... I can't stop ...

"He's a world-famous Amish gangster haunted by memories of 'Nam. She's a man-hating out-of-work archaeologist descended from a line of powerful witches. They fight crime!"

Sep. 7th, 2009 @ 01:00 am The yearly beach picnic
Current Mood: amused
First time I've been around and able to go in ... at least 5 years, if not longer?

I went to the beach, and, as usual, was in that delightfully awkward age-group between the old-folks-with-kids and the younger-kids. It's getting better, insofar as I'm old enough to have a reasonable, or at least witty, conversation with the older folks there.

There were s'mores, and a bonfire, and I sang some sea shanties to a wonderfully appreciative audience, with and without guitar and vocal accompaniment.

The highlight, I think, was when the other guy and I were singing 'Barrett's Privateers' and this male young'un started conducting with his marshmallow stick. ( I think the appeal was the words 'god damn' in the chorus; oh, to be young and easily amused by swear words.)

Now, to sleep!

Current Mood: thinky
Current Music: Dismemberment Plan - The Other Side

Some selections from the long list of "Things I've learned from fencing"

  • Before you act, think: 'how will this: affect things, be reacted to, and play out in the long run?'

  • Before you act, think: 'will this action: leave me open to attack, put me in a bad situation, or give me no room to recover?'

  • Be aware of your distance, always.

These are not just useful for fencing.

Current Location: United States, New York, Bronx
Current Mood: determined

So, after a conversation with a dear friend last week, I realize I've left you-all a lot more in the dark than I intended to about my decision to go to law school.

What say we remedy that?

There will be three posts. For amusement's sake, let's title them:
  1. The Short Change
  2. The Long Change
  3. and The Chinese Epic

The first one will be open-posted.
The second will be friends-only.
The third will be behind a thorough filter.

That said, if you'd like to see either of the latter two, and can't read them on LJ, email me: sunistrimza AT gmail.com
I'm happy to share, but don't want to post all of it up for anyone to see.

This one's a bit long, but it goes over about 5-6 years of my life, so I think that's justified.

Anyway, without further ado,

Oh Craigslist.

Anyone need a sweet electric keyboard-piano?

For the record, I'm not just procrastinating a little. I also really need a lamp, because this overhead-fluorescent is not nearly enough lumens for yours truly.
